2011 GSoC KDE Projects and Season of KDE

04/26/2011

The KDE project accepted 51 students into this year's Google Summer of Code (GSoC) program and announced the return of its own Season of KDE.

"The KDE Community is grateful to Google for sponsoring the Summer of Code, now in its 7th year, and for giving both students and mentors the opportunity to improve the software we use every day", said KDE developer Aaron Reichman.

According to Reichman, students who participate in GSoC will work on every level of the KDE project; until May 23rd, students will get to know to the KDE project and the community. From May 23rd through the end of August, students will work with their mentors on individual projects.

Student projects include mobile profiles for Amarok and Marble, file sharing on a personal cloud server, adding QML Video support to Phonon and integrating Telepathy into the Plasma workspace.

Reichman also announced the return of the Season of KDE, a separate program that is sponsored by the KDE community and runs in parallel with the GSoC. Lydia Pintsher will be managing the 2011 Season of KDE, which
matches mentors with contributors, providing them support as they get involved with the KDE project and start coding. In addition to the experience of working on the project, Season of KDE participants will receive a t-shirt and certificate.
