Ubuntu will participate in the Google Summer of Code 2010

According to a post on The Fridge - Ubuntu will once again participate in the Google Summer of Code.

The Ubuntu Google Summer of Code wiki describes the participation this way: It is a great opportunity to expose new students to the wonderful world of Ubuntu, get some exciting projects off the ground and get good exposure for the projects, students and organisations alike.

The main goal for this program is to encourage university student participation in the open source world. It is a great opportunity for students in Computer Science or related fields. Google Summer of Code (GSoC) is an annual program, in which Google awards stipends to hundreds of students who successfully complete a requested free software / open-source coding project during the summer.

The program is open to students aged 18 or older.

The program invites students who meet their eligibility criteria to post applications that detail the software-coding project they wish to perform. The applications are then evaluated by interested mentors.

The timelines for students and mentors are:

The list of accepted Mentoring Organizations will be announced on March 18, 2010 at 12 noon PDT / 19:00 UTC and will be posted on the Google Summer of Code 2010 site.

The student application period begins March 29, 2010 at 12 noon PDT / 19:00 UTC and ends April 9, 2010 at 12:00 at 12 noon PDT / 19:00 UTC. Please see the Google Summer of Code 2010 timeline and FAQs for further information.
